How to make a personalized lemonade pitcher, inspired by Beyoncé.
Stop what you're doing, put on some Beyoncé and sip on your favorite summertime drink.
One of the best things about DIY and crafts is that you can do something simple, but also make it your own. You can pull your inspiration from anywhere, like books, movies and especially music.
Beyoncé's newest album, Lemonade, isn't just great for listening (or watching), it can also motivate you to do a new project. Queen Bey would want you to feel productive.
Here's how you can make your very own Lemonade themed pitcher, using some simple glass etching.
- Glass pitcher*
- Pattern stencil, printed on sticker paper**
- Latex or vinyl gloves
- Etching cream (Armour-Etch is most common)
- Paintbrush
- Scissors
- Optional: X-Acto blade
* Be sure to choose a pitcher without any designs or grooves on it. You will need a smooth surface. We chose a tall, cylindrical pitcher, but you can do this tutorial on almost any shape.
**You can make your own pattern with sticker paper, with stencil paper or with pre-made stencils. More on that in Step One.
Step One:
Print your stencil on sticker paper — which is 8 and 1/2 by 11 shipping label paper. You can find full sheets at an office supply store. To print, choose a font you like and a simple vector graphic (easily downloaded from the Internet), and arrange on your sheet with plenty of room between each letter or design.
It's important to note, this tutorial will require an etching cream that washes off with water. Since sticker paper can leave residue and can be difficult to take off, you can also buy stenciling paper or pre-made stencils. However, printing your design on sticker paper is much cheaper and can give you great results.
Cut squares around your designs and letters and cut out any colored-in areas with either scissors or an X-Acto knife. These empty spaces are where you will want the etches glass to show.
Firmly adhere your sticker to the glass, making sure all edges are securely places down. This way, you won't have your edges to bleed together and look messy.
Step Two:
Make sure you put on your latex or vinyl gloves before using the etching cream. The cream has the consistency of glue and can potentially harm your skin and clothes.
Apply a liberal amount of cream over your stencil, keeping your layer of cream even on the surface.
Follow the bottle instructions for dry time — which can be anywhere between one and 10 minutes. The longer you leave the cream on the glass, the more solid your result will be. We left ours on for 5 minutes.
Step Three:
Peel off as much sticker paper as you can. It is very likely that it will leave some residue behind, which can be washed off with water.
You can use a sponge to wipe away excess cream and paper residue, or even rinse the entire pitcher in the sink. Feel free to scrub and rinse as much as you can. The faster you remove the excess residue, the better your pattern will turn out.
Step Four:
Once you've scrubbed away the excess, you should be left with a nice, clean, frosted glass look.
Unfortunately, you find you've made a mistake, you cannot remove areas that have been etched — only add to them. You can cover your mistakes by getting creative with more cream.
Now that your design is done, feel free to serve up some ice cold lemonade and have a dance party!
