First your carpool. Then your car. Google is building a service to take on Uber
Google is working fast and furiously on its next big step to take on ride-hailing app Uber.
The technology giant, under parent Alphabet, is building a new service that connects commuters for the potential of carpooling, The Wall Street Journalreported Tuesday via an anonymous source familiar with the matter.
The service will be a part the Google-owned Waze app, which currently provides drivers with driving directions and community-sourced traffic information. It is expected to be available in San Francisco and the greater Bay Area this fall.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The news comes a day after David Drummond, Alphabet's senior vice president of corporate development and chief legal officer, stepped down from Uber's board of directors, The Wall Street Journal reported. It had earlier been reported that Drummond no longer attended meetings and was expected to leave, according toThe Information.
From Tuesday's report, the service does not appear to be directly akin to Uber, Lyft and other rivals. Those businesses are referred to as ride-hailing in the fact that riders hail drivers like an on-demand car or taxi service. Instead, Google's version would be classified as ride-sharing.
The driver of the carpool would still earn revenue from Google's service, however. The pilot charges riders 54 cents per mile. Unlike Uber and Lyft, Google does not take a cut — yet.
This move could be Google's first public step in a quest to overtake Uber. Drummond said he resigned from Uber's board due to "overlap between the two companies," according to The Journal.
