Corey Crawford roughs up Blues’ Robby Fabbri after collision (Video)

The Chicago Blackhawks didn’t have what you’d call an “enforcer” on the roster this season, as Andrew Shaw led the team in major penalties with three.

Perhaps that’s why Corey Crawford decided to take matters into his own hands in Game 4 of their divisional semifinal against the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night. 

In the second period, Robby Fabbri crashed into Crawford on a scoring attempt, and Crawford didn’t appreciate it. So he skated out of his crease and accosts Fabbri, who shoves back.

Crawford eventually fell to the ice, his mask coming off and then a melee between the teams started.

Did Fabbri deserve a goalie interference call here, with Toews on his backside and Crawford lunging to this right? I don’t believe so, but that ended up negating the roughing call on Crawford, who sparked the chaos. Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk were given roughing calls; Andrew Ladd got one for Chicago, but that was it.

The end result of a play in which Corey Crawford left his crease and went after a skater? A Blackhawks power play! One on which Duncan Keith scored to take a temporary 2-1 lead in Game 4! (The Blues would tie the game later on their own power play.)

Crawford, by the way, didn’t earn a penalty minute in 79 previous playoff games.
