Google Doodle celebrates the 90th anniversary of Indian cartoonist Mario Miranda.
Google marked the 90th birth anniversary of celebrated Indian cartoonist Mario Miranda with a doodle that pays homage to his characteristically complex, crowded and nuanced scenes.
Miranda drew inspiration from the bustling city of Mumbai, drawing multi-layered scenes of dense humanity, which were detailed and managed to retain the individual quirks of each person. The Google doodle made by comic artist Aaron Reiner, known for his fascination with crowds, draws upon this aspect.
“That is what I liked most about his work,” Renier explained in a blog post, “trying to pick out who knows who, who's watching who, who's annoyed by who, who's enamored by who. Hopefully people will see something of [Miranda’s] spirit in it.”
Reiner's rainy scene shows a litany of colourful characters and umbrellas, such as a romancing couple who get a disapproving look from an elderly woman, and a man trying to catch his flying umbrella. At the top left window, there is a reference to Miranda himself, observing and drawing the people below.
“I approached Mario’s work by pretending I was drawing with him,” Reiner added. “I chose his most popular style, very flat with criss-crossing interactions.”
While Miranda never formally studied art, he remains of one's most-loved cartoonists. Miranda was widely published in newspapers and magazines such as The Times of India, The Economic Times and The Illustrated Weekly of India. His work lives in numerous murals in various parts of India, the most famous of which is at Mumbai's Cafe Mondegar.
In India, the anniversary is being celebrated with a massive exhibition of Miranda's cartoons and drawings in his home state Goa, the release of a new book The Life of Mario 1949 and concerts.
